Making Tracks

Posted by Peanut in WinterWildlifeSpring

With our spell of warm weather all sorts of critters have been out and about. These tracks were all seen on or near the path to work last week. Some I can recognize, others not. If you know who left a set of mystery tracks please leave a note in the comments so we'll know for next time.

These tracks remind me of rabbits but I think they may be from a squirrel based on some tracks near our house that lead to a known squirrel hideout. I'll have to keep a close watch on our back yard to learn for sure.

These are easy. Ptarmigan tracks are everywhere right now but I hardly ever see the birds themselves. I particularly liked this patch of tracks because it includes wing marks, though I don't know if they are from take-off or landing.

I wasn't the one who spotted these tiny tracks but once we'd found them we were able to follow them for a quite a while, crossing the path more than once and dipping into hollows in the snow.

When I took this picture I thought these tracks were the same as the other tiny ones above but looking at them now I think they are from someone else: the feet are paired differently and I'm pretty sure I can see a tail mark.
