As you can see in my last entry, we got a bit of sunshine last Sunday. What you can't tell is that it was also warm outside. It must have been the first day since September when it has been both warm (i.e. above -20) and sunny at the same time - we've been having a very grey winter. I decided that this called for a walk so as soon as I was finished photographing my mittens I put them on and headed outside with my camera.

Pattern: mine because the one I was originally using didn't make sense (or fit) even at gauge.
Yarn: Cherry Tree Hill Possum Worsted in Ratta (70% Merino, 30% Possum)
Yardage: most of two skeins
Needles: 3.25 mm dpn's

I've actually been wearing these mittens for a few weeks now but only attached the i-cord dummy string (dummy string out of idiot cord - ha ha) attached today. They are much warmer than my previous mittens (which I bought and are made of some unknown fibre that survived the washer and the dryer) and I can actually carry things around at -30 and still feel my fingers (otherwise I tend to keep my hands in my pockets for extra warmth) - those possums must be cozy critters! I'm always worried I'll leave my mittens somewhere (because I have before) so I decided to give this pair some dummy strings so I wont have to think about it (or find somewhere to store them when they're off).

We went to the 2008 Malanka held by the local Ukrainian Association last night. We'd never gone before but will definitely go again. I didn't have my camera last night so this is a picture of the hair band that was decorating our table.Elise (the lovely lady whoinvited us) said I could wear it (and gave us a wonderful doggie bag of sausage and perogies when we went home). There was so much food; we ate perogies and sausages and cabbage rolls until we were stuffed. After dinner there were Ukrainian dances performed by adults and children (the four year olds were so cute) in traditional outfits and then general dances for everyone else (we polka'd to the best of our ability - loads of fun).
