Last Monday we applied to the local SPCA to adopt one of four collie-cross puppies that were available. We waited tensely all week and on Friday evening we received a call back. Abby came home with us at lunch time today.
She's very cute, as you can see, and very cuddly. Our first stop was the Pet Boutique (connected to the kennels) to get all our puppy essentials. It was lots of fun picking out a cute collar and some toys for her to play with (we also got food and a crate and those sorts of things).
The initial meeting with Zeke went very well; perhaps he has known dogs before (Zeke had a long life before we got him) because he did not hiss or growl or even run away quickly. He let the puppy smell him (she was smelling everything), ate a treat from me and then went back to sleeping in the bed (Rob reports that he purred a bit once there). He's stayed there pretty much ever since - he's not keen on changes - but doesn't seem to feel the puppy is any sort of threat.
After lunch we went for our first walk (with mixed results - it's difficult to walk when you're trying to scratch at your collar).
... and our first nap.
Edit (29.11.08) - If you saw this entry before the 29th of November you'll notice that we've changed our puppy's name. Her original name, Sunkiss, was a variation of her name with the SPCA, Sunkist, but less brand-name-y. We thought it would be easier than giving her a totally new name but we found it kind of awkward to say. We both liked the idea of her having a person name; I named off a bunch of pretty girls' names and Rob chose Abby. We think it suites her very well and she doesn't seem to be at all confused.
Zeke and Abby are still getting used to each other. They get a bit jealous of each other and like to eat the other's food. Abby has tried to play with Zeke a couple of time and has been batted at but never with claws out; he's amazingly patient with her.
