I did a spring walk, and a summer walk, so when Maisie, Abby and I left the house last Sunday afternoon I thought the light was so pretty I thought it was time to do a winter walk. The camera on my phone doesn't show the sky the way we were seeing it - slow transitions of blue and pink and rose and green fading into a deep blue. The sun was just dipping below the horizon as we headed out. 3 pm. It won't be completely dark for another hour or so. We do really slow sunsets here. People have been out clearing their sidewalks so the walking isn't bad. Abby is patient and sits while I take out my phone and snap a picture. I always wonder what Maisie is doing in the back of the amouti. Just hanging out it seems. She must like it. When I look back through the pictures I find a little grin. I want a picture with me too and she pulls herself up to look over my shoulder. I love those winter rosy cheeks.
Tuffs of boggy grass are now funny bumps in the snow. Taller plants catch little fluffs of snow like frozen cotton balls. Tree branches stand out against the sky. The bridge is always one of my favourite spots. We look across to the setting sun. A deep orange smudge on the horizon. Someone has cut the snow along the edge of the bridge into crenelations. I wonder how old that person is? Mountain Alder cones collect snow too. I'm always amazed how much snow can collect on such tiny things. I'm glad of my warm mittens. It's not too cold out today but it's cold enough that I want to warm up my hand between pictures.
The last bit of the path never gets ploughed. Fortunately someone has been along on a skidoo and the snow has been packed down. We can see out over the big lake from the street on the way home. Looking opposite the sunset the sky is full of pink and purple. I'd plugged in the Christmas lights before we left the house. It's not quite dark enough for them but they are still so pretty and cheery.
