I'm wearing new socks today. These socks were complete, except for a couple of ends that needed to be woven in, way back in June. I was working on them when we were in BC but hadn't seen them since I'd unpacked. I was sure they were somewhere in my sewing room. I found them in a bin yesterday after Ollie and Fred chased The Best Cat Toy Ever* under our bed and I was poking around to see if I could find any signs of it.
This is the first time I've ever used self patterning sock yarn. Somehow when I was first learning to knit I'd got the impression that you had to use a very specific stitch count and have the perfect gauge for this yarn to work out. I think I was misled. Different stitch counts and gauges will certainly give you a different finished product but I don't see how anything you end up with could be bad. Every time I look at my feet today I smile. Simple, simple knitting - fancy socks. Maybe it's because this yarn tends to look a bit weird and muddy in the ball but I never expected the resulting socks to be so neat. I want to try more.
I didn't bother to match the socks up perfectly. It's not hard to do (you just start with the same spot in the pattern for both socks) but I kind of liked the idea of mismatched-matching socks. And I was lazy.

*The Best Cat Toy Ever is actually a live mouse that emerged from wherever it was hiding late Sunday night. Ollie and Fred chased it around the family room and eventually into our bedroom without us being able to catch it. The last place it ran was under our bed. We don't know where it went after that (it's definitely not under the bed). Hopefully it found another hole somewhere and escaped the house.
